On 28th December we celebrate the 178th anniversary of the Proclamation of South Australia in 1836. Then on 26th January, Australia Day, we remember 227 years of European settlement in our land.
we thank you for this land of Australia:
its wide spaces, varied coastline, ancient hills,
its mystery and its beauty.
We pray for all who know this land as home:
for the Indigenous people, ancient custodians of the land,
for those whose ancestors came from other lands
and for newcomers from many places.
We pray for those whose lives have been broken
by disaster, disease, poverty or unemployment,
for victims of violence and for the violent,
for victims of crime and for those who commit crimes.
we thank you for expressions of compassion,
for voluntary aid and community care,
for sharing between city and country.
We pray that government and people,
informed by truth and directed by love,
may be quick to act for justice
and reject all discrimination.
God of yesterday, today and tomorrow,
we thank you for those who established this State and Nation,
for their vision, their hope, their tenacity
and their faith in you, our God.
Help us to see what is valuable
in the work of those who went before us,
yet keep us open to new possibilities,
stimulated by hope and strengthened by faith.
God bless Australia.
