Rev. Tanner was fourth President of the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly from 1985 to 1988 and the first Moderator of the Synod of South Australia from 1977-1979.
Ian was born and grew up in Launceston. He left school at just 15 years old to work as a laboratory assistant, undertaking an evening course in industrial chemistry.[i] In 1944 he joined the air force as a trainee pilot. He was posted in Adelaide where he met and married Joan. After the war he studied at the University of Tasmania, gaining a Science degree in 1955. Five years later he was called to study for the Presbyterian ministry. He then served in parishes in the Melbourne suburbs of Prahran and Koonung Heights, then at Scots Church Adelaide for 18 years.
Ian was a Director of Lay Education for the Uniting Church in South Australia during which time he served for three years as the National President of the Uniting Church, then Director of the Uniting Vision for the Synod of South Australia and finally as minister in the Canberra Central Parish from 1992 until his retirement in 1996.[ii]
Rev. Tanner devoted his life to ministry within the Uniting Church and we are thankful for his years of service. He was an inspiring leader who had a significant impact on the early life of the church.[iii] He influenced lives in ways beyond measure[iv]. He was a loving man, a man of dreams and vision, an inspiring leader, a wise mentor and faithful servant of Christ.[v]
He was married to Joan for 63 years and was the father of five children.
A plaque on the eastern wall is dedicated in his memory.
